Social Security runs two programs for persons who are disabled and unable to work. Check eligibility for benefits here.
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is an insurance program that most workers pay into Social Security while they are working. To become eligible for SSDI disability benefits, you must have insured status. To have this insured status, you must have worked long enough and recently enough before your disability.
Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) is a financial aid program that provides monthly income regardless if you have never worked and your age when you became disabled.
You can apply for SSDI and SSI through the Social Security Administration (SSA). You can apply in person at an SSA office, over the phone by calling (800) 772-1213, or online.
